Mrs. Chopra came to Kolkata somewhere in the year 1975 along with her sailor husband and made the city her home. After settling herself, she started offering private tuitions to the children in her locality. The response she received from the parents due to the progress of their children inspired her to start a school of her own.
St. Francis Xavier School had a humble beginning in the ground floor of a bungalow in Salt Lake City somewhere in the year 1983. Initially the school had only about 33 odd children. As Mrs. Chopra worked hard for her institution, the school started to see rapid growth in numbers as well as in reputation. Soon, St. Francis Xavier School was running in double shifts in as many as four different bungalows in Salt Lake City.
As the school progressed, there was felt a natural need to get the school affiliated and also find a permanent home for its campus. With great personal struggle and tenacity, Mrs. Chopra approached the authorities of the time and was successful in getting a piece of land where the current campus of the school is now situated. The school also got affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi.
